The political history of the world, both in ancient and modern history, is replete and even overflow with names of saboteurs who at one one time or the other ruthlessly sabotaged as well as betrayed either their masters, allies or associates.
In all, there are three classical examples of this eternally reprehensible betrayal trajectory, each representing an epoch of a particular generation.
The first was Brutus’ brutal betrayal and subsequent elimination of the Great Caesar, his most trusted political ally and bossom friend, in the quest for leadership succession in the then intimidating Roman Empire. Prior to Brutus’ heartless attack on Caesar, the Roman emperor had survived an avalanche of mindless stab but bravely soldiered on until his friend’s unexpected brutality sent him to the gallows.
Hopelessly taking a last minute look at Brutus, absolutely devastated Caesar managed to put a clearly irrelevant but apparently searching rhetorical question to wit: And you Brutus? After which he gave up the ghost. Till date, Brutus is ajudged as the patron saints of all betrayers and saboteurs.
The other patriarch of betrayers was a dishonourable character named Judas Iscariot. Of all the 12 apostles, Judas was the closest to Jesus Christ on the account that their mothers came from the same parents. Lo and behold, when the chips were down, it was Judas who accepted the horrendous job of betraying Jesus, his master, his cousin.
As it were with Brutus and Judas, so also it is with Senator Samuel Anyanwu also known as Samdaddy who was the PDP governorship candidate in the last November 11, 2023 election, and his running mate, Rt. Hon (Dr) Jones Onyeriri.
Tracing the story where it actually began, Samdaddy was in the Imo House of Assembly as member representing Ikeduru State Constiency when then deputy speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, provided him with the required political platforms and he took a quantum leap from Imo State House of Assembly to Senate as the senator representing Imo East (Owerri Zone). It was a political voyage many never thought would ever see the light of the day, but Ihedioha made it possible.
Taking a most dangerous clue from Brutus, Samdaddy, who two weeks earlier had triumphed as senator elect on the back of Ihedioha through PDP votes, inexplicably failed in his booth, ward and council just 14 days after his election as senator elect. He failed abysmaly on the day of the governorship election by joining forces with the APC against his benefactor, against the man on whose back he journeyed to the Red chamber. The circumstances surrounding Samdaddy’s betrayal of Ihedioha not only stinks, it is also absolutely nauseating.
As 2019 general elections beckoned, Samdaddy, without any recourse to his capacity and how he emerged as senator in 2015, and still serving as member representing Owerri Zone in the National Assembly, nursed the vaulting ambition of contesting for the Imo state governorship election. Of course, it was his constitutional right. But he was well aware that Ihedioha had been servicing as well as maintaining the Imo PDP structure, hence, the party’s platform is virtually his (Ihedioha), so to say.
Yet, Samdaddy dared Ihedioha for the PDP ticket. On October 1,2018, at the PDP governorship primary election organized at Kanu Nwankwo Sports Complex, Owerri, Ihedioha trounced and trumped Samdaddy to emerge the party’s governorship candidate for the 2019 election. Rather than Samdaddy embracing Ihedioha and identifying with him for the governorship campaigns and ultimate election, he headed for the court and challenged Ihedioha’s victory up to the supreme court. The distraction was absolute and Samdaddy was all out to distort Ihedioha’s campaign strategies.
Eventually, Ihedioha won the 2019 governorship election but sadly, after seven months, a controversial supreme court judgment sacked him. While the PDP family in the state and Nigeria at large were in deep morning and protested that verdict across the country, Samdaddy celebrated the condemnable declaration by granting interview on national television that Ihedioha’s ouster was “the best thing ever to have happened to Imo State”. He lauded Governor Uzodimma as the man to reposition Imo State. It was politically horrifying.
In between, Samdaddy put up his hand up for the position of national secretary of PDP and Ihedioha, irrespective of Samdaddy’s blackmail against him, supported him just as he hosted Samdaddy when he emerged. Unfortunately, the only opposition Samdaddy saw standing between him and emerging the Imo State governor in 2023 was Ihedioha. To that effect, Samdaddy began working against Ihedioha and how to eliminate him politically in Imo.
First, Samdaddy, employing the instrument of blackmail, leveled all manner of false accusations against Ihedioha. He got the ears of Imo PDP Council of Elders and shockingly, all of Sir Ambrose Ejiogu, Chief Peter Mgbemelu and Chief Duruiheoma dumped Ihedioha for Samdaddy. In the same manner, PDP leaders like Ambassador Kema Chikwe, Rt Hon Bede Ekeh and few others, based on the satanic lies peddled against Ihedioha by Samdaddy, also followed the immediate past PDP national secretary. The question is, why did these well established politicians quit Samdaddy’s camp for APC’s Hope Uzodimma?
Second, Samdaddy did all he could to sack Ihedioha as the leader of Imo PDP. On several occasions he went up to the supreme court challenges the authenticity of the State Working Committee, SWC. And on all the occasions the courts ruled against him.
Third, as he could not sack the state’s SWC, Samdaddy began usurping the powers of the executive members. He never allowed them to function in full capacities as required by law. To that effect, seven of the SWC members resigned en masse, giving Samdaddy as the sole reason why they left the party. In effect, it was the gradual but steady death knell on PDP in Imo caused by no other person than Samdaddy.
What followed then was resignation galore as the four PDP members of the National Assembly left PDP to join APC and their reason was Samdaddy’s highhndedness.
When the Imo PDP governorship primary election came knocking, Ihedioha abandoned the ticket for Samdaddy and the rest as it is said, is history.
The drama, however, was when Jones showed up in Samdaddy’s camp. Jones was very close to Ihedioha. Why not? As deputy speaker, Ihedioha ensured Jones was made House Committee on Banking and Currency. After serving out his tenure, Jones, with the support of Ihedioha, picked PDP’s ticket for Imo West senatorial zone. When Jones lost that election and Ihedioha had won the Imo 2019 governorship election, the latter picked the former as his ChiefPolitical Adviser.Virtually all the appointments and works done in Orlu Zone in Ihedioha’s seven month reign had Jones blessings. That romance lasted for just seven months. Following Ihedioha’s sack by the supreme court, Jones thought it was all over for Ihedioha, and pitched his tent with Samdaddy. It was another great act of betrayal against the former Imo State governor.
The foregoing was what gave birth to the discredited SamJones PDP ticket of the last election. It was a ticket built on hollow foundation and so it was meant to sink and it sank irredeemably. It was a partnership that was nurtured on lies, groomed in betrayal and it exoectedly ended tragically. That was why the PDP recorded its worst outing in the last governorship election because Samdaddy was not in that race really but to destroy Ihedioha and Imo PDP.
