Imo commissioner stresses on fighting insecurity to standstill

By Mary Ugorji

The Imo State Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Prince Ugorji Okechukwu, has stated that the 3r government led by Governor Hope Uzodimma is committed to fight insecurity to standstill in the state.

The Commissioner stated this during a press briefing, held recently, in Owerri.

Ugorji disclosed that his office has officially resumed work and so needs partnership and cooperation from all well meaning persons in the state especially journalists.

He stated that one of the roles of the ministry is to look for means to see that all security outfits in the state cooperate and work together through collaboration to achieve a set goal of security and peace.

He said “it was learnt that as part of promoting security in our communities the existence of vigilante is very necessary. I therefore advise that each community should deem it fit to produce one and have it adequately registered for easy identification which can be done singly as an autonomous community or as a group of autonomous communities that have a central vigilante”, stating that such is a project ongoing in all the 27 local government areas of Imo State.

Ugorji added that insecurity can be handled in two ways either by use of hard power or soft power. He disclosed that “being a new ministry, a lot of things are yet to boom, just as the intelligence gathering and operations are yet to commence”.

The Commissioner assured that he would do everything humanly possible to ensure that insecurity is tackled, hinting that Uzodinma has tried tremendously to curb crime and violence in the state, “only that some persons have refused to applaud him”.
