Save before you spend NDIC boss tells Nigerians .. As Agency  marks  2022 financial literacy  day

By Austin Okoro

A resource person and the Zonal Controller of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation NDIC Owerri Zonal office, Mr Felix Ogwuche has stressed the need for individuals and households to always save some portion of their income (money) when it comes into their hands before spending the rest on their needs, as it will go a long way in securing the future.

He stated this while delivering a lecture to some cross sections of students and teachers at Government secondary School Owerri on Wednesday in commemoration of the 2022 financial literacy day with the theme, ” build your future , be smart about money”.

Mr Ogwuche noted that many Nigerians are careless about the use of money and thereby waste it on frivolities instead of saving some for future use. He stated that if you are not literate you will lavish your money on things that are not useful to you but urged Nigerians to learn, save and invest.
” Learn about money and how to manage it. You must save some money for yourself. Saving means putting money aside now to be used in the future,” he stated.

Sir Ogwuche enjoins participants to save their money in the bank, or other registered financial institutions but not at home.
” Put your money in a bank , don’t keep it under the pillow to avoid someone removing it, because if the bank goes under, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation NDIC will give you back your money,” he enthused.

The Zonal Controller NDIC admonishes participants to always invest their money on things that will yield profit and give them more money, but warned against patronizing wonder banks that wants to double their money on the shortest possible time as such banks are fraudulent or criminals.

NDIC Zonal boss went further to explain that the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation was established to give insurance cover to depositor’s money in case banks go under.

Speaking during an interview with the press, one of the participants who is a student of Owerri City Secondary School, Ebuzor Majesty said he learnt that Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation is an insurance agency that handles only depositor’s money and does not do other insurance policies. He said one of the benefits of NDIC is that when a bank fails, the depositors can get their saved money back. The Junior secondary three student also learnt that one should save some portion of money first before spending the remaining adding that Saving is the amount of money kept aside for the future. He enjoins Nigerians that extravagant spending is not good but advised that when you save, it will be useful in future.

Other resource persons at the event included Mrs Ngene Edith, the Assistant Director Human Resources department NDIC, Mrs Chimezie- Amadi Chinenye Ijeoma , Communication and Public Affairs, amongst others.
